Home Isn’t a Location…It’s a Lived Feeling

For many TCKs, the question “Where are you from?” doesn’t come with a simple answer.

Is it the country where you were born?

The last place you lived?

The language that feels most natural in your mouth?

Or the passport in your drawer?

We’re taught to think of home as a point on the map, but for so many of us it’s something else entirely.

Home is the sound of your parents’ accents, the smell of the kitchen you grew up in, the sound of music blasting through the speakers at the local market, the feeling of being understood without having to explain, the vibrant colors and textiles, the feeling of sun on your skin after the rain stops during rainy season, the taste of lime and chili on just about anything…

Sometimes that sense of home is scattered across continents—fragmented, yet still deeply yours.

You don’t need to choose one place to belong.

You don’t need to shrink your story to fit in a small box.

You are allowed to belong in layers.

To carry pieces of home in your body, your memories, your way of seeing the world…because home isn’t a location. It’s a lived feeling.

And you are allowed to feel at home in yourself.
